Ian - you surprise me - I thought Exmoor was ok - I would rather that than a flat course like Florida again!
Anyway have been on the web and checked out some (reasonably local)Audax rides - October dates I have are
6 Oct - 110km starting from Woodbridge - www.greenlivingcentre.org.uk/ctc
7 Oct - 205km starting from Bedford - no web - email jackie.popland@ntlworld.com
13 Oct - 105km - Saffron Waldon - r.parotte@btinternet.com (organised by Shaftesbury CC) This was the one Sue and I did last year and can highly recommend it!
28 Oct - 101km - Stevenage www.ctcherts.org.uk.
Obviously I am not planning to do all of these but would like to get some good miles in my legs and this is a fun way of doing it. I also love company!
Will provide more details if requested.

Hi Zena
I think you may incur the wrath of the chairman if you enroll everyone for the 7th Oct I think that is the Southend 10k day.
I would be interested in 13th and 28th although need to get HQ authority for a day pass first. _________________ Regards

Zena, Florida sounds just perfect – the flatter the better! The problem is that I just don’t doing any hill training – nearly all the runs I do are during my lunch hour in London and its very flat. The closest hill is probably Greenwich which is about 5 miles from the city. In fact the last hill I ran up prior to Exmoor was during the One Tree Hill X-Country in February! Really I should try and do at least one hill session a week but I just don’t get the time.
Thanks for the links to the Sportives – I will probably wait until next year before going too long on the bike. Lets hope we have a mild winter because if it gets too cold I can normally only manage two or three hours. My feet turn to ice!
If you like Steve we could try to arrange one of the Sunday morning bikes rides in the Autumn to be held at Box Hill. We could do the bike loop a few times so you get an idea of what to expect. There is also great café at the top. It is only an hour in the car. |

hi,
the ride on the 13th also has a 202km route!! (probably a bit too early in my training for this lenght of cycle).
Entry forms are available on http://www.shaftesbury-cc.fsnet.co.uk/

| 202 kms is definitely too long in the saddle for me at the moment. 105 kms would be just about right and hopefully we can hang onto some of the Shaftsbury guys when they start to crank it up after a couple of hours. |

Think few of us up for shorter ride - mike and I have to go to nephew's first birthday party that afternoon. Roll on the 202km rides in the new year - I can get excited about them then - just not now!
I wiil mention it at BBQ and club on Mon and round up some more company.
I assume Richard S is now getting some sleep if he is thinking of cranking it up with the Sahftesbury boys. Personally I like the way Sue and I did it lasy year - getting to know new people with lots of bacon sandwiches and tea at half time!! And the cakes were good at the end! |

| For those of you mad enough to be doing Ironman Austria next year, what do you think about organising some club kit just for this race? In view of the length of the race I suspect that we may need a tri-suit with a bit more padding and with a few pockets. The kit would of course be in club colours but we could also design then with our name and IM Austria 2008 on them. I don’t know if our current kit suppliers can come up with something. If not we could always try an alternative supplier. Any thoughts? |

good idea Ian. Seem to remember you bought a tri suit especially for Switzerland 2006. How did that suit work for you? _________________

I'd take one with pockets if it didn't have IM Austria on it, as I entered IM France on Friday (while drunk, of course). I'll enter an IM sober one day. I wore a tri suit during IMUK and got no chafing at all, so personally I wouldn't bother with the padding. |

Neil, I only really bought that suit because it had pockets – the tri-suit was made by Zoot and at the time I think they were the only tri-suit manufacturer who made them with pockets. The padding was about the same as most other tri-suits and as with Lee I had no problems with chaffing. The pockets are great for keeping gels and energy bars and it saves having to change clothes in transition.
Good luck with IM France Lee. I saw that on telly a few weeks ago. The bikes looks pretty nasty. Some very long Alpine style climbs! |

2008 - start of IM training. Had to change RF training plan slightly as still had kids at home so first bike ride would be on News Year Day. Invited a few others along but was looked at very oddly! However Sue and Janice kept me company.
Target 3 hours steady riding. Start of ride 10.30 - rider 1 slight technical problem at Battlesbridge - got to top of Hawk Hill rider 2 suffers puncture.
Get out of S W Ferrers and rider 3 gets phone call from child 1 asking for lift ("ring your father"). Rider 1 then needs comfort stop. All then goes well for a while til rider 2 needs comfort stop somewhere on the Dengie marshes. (NB girls go BEHIND bushes!) Little bit further and rider 3 gets phone call from child 2 asking for pink welly boots for birthday ("not now!") Little bit further rider 3 gets puncture. Puncture repaired whilst being supervised by rather vocal geese! Fog now closes in. Finally get off Dengie Marshes and head for home. Arrived back at base some time after 2. Sounds like the ride from hell? Well it was actually one of the best rides I have had for a long time and I have to thank Sue and Janice for making it so much fun. If all my IM training is like this - bring it on!!!! |

| Zena, just for information, the girlies didn't seem to go behind bushes during IMCH - all must have been watching Paula Radcliff and her particular (and public) technique; damned near made me fall off my bike! Now there's a thought, I never did ask Ian George why he did indeed fall off his!! |
